These Rules and Regulations are final on all matters relating to the Authentic Alberta photo contest (the “Contest”). By applying, all entrants agree to be bound by these Rules and Regulations.
The Sponsors (“Contest Sponsors”) of the Contest are Travel Alberta (400, 1601-9 Avenue SE, Calgary AB T2G 0H4) and Canadian Geographic Enterprises (Suite 200, 1155 Lola Street, Ottawa, ON K1K 4C1).
To be eligible to enter the Contest or win a prize, you must be a permanent resident of Canada and not an employee of, a member of the immediate family of, or domiciled with an employee of any division of Travel Alberta, Canadian Geographic, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society or their subsidiaries, affiliates, and agencies.
No purchase is necessary to enter the Contest or to win a prize.
All photographs entered in the Contest must be of Canadian content (i.e. taken in Canada).
The Grand Prize is limited to Entrants aged 21 and over.
*Legal considerations require restricting the Contest to Canadian residents (our apologies to members residing outside the country.)
Personal Information collected from Entrants by the Contest Sponsors will be used by the Contest Sponsors or their affiliates to administer the Contest and in connection with the publication of winning photographs. Neither the Contest Sponsors nor their affiliates will share personal information relating to Entrants with any third parties, except as necessary for the administration of the Contest or as may be required by law. The Contest Sponsors respect the privacy of everyone who enters the Contest.

Format of Photographs for Submission
All entries must be submitted electronically as .jpg files through the website of the contest http://alberta.canadiangeographic.ca/. Digital files should be at least 1,000 pixels wide for a horizontal image or 1,000 pixels tall for a vertical image at 72 dpi. Content alteration of digital files is not acceptable; cropping of photos is permitted, tonal or colour corrections are acceptable, including black and white conversion.
Entrants must be able to provide a high-resolution version of each photo that they submit (uncompressed TIFF or maximum quality JPEG, Grayscale or Colour (RGB), minimum 1600 pixels on the longest side). For photographs that are selected as a winning entry, the high-resolution version of the photograph may be required for reproduction by Canadian Geographic. Entrants who fail to provide a high-resolution version within the time period set by the Contest Sponsors (not to exceed one week following prize notification) will forfeit the prize and an alternate winner will be selected by the judging panel. In such a case, no substitute or alternate prizes will be awarded.
Entries and Identification
Photographs may be entered into four categories as described below:
Wildlife in Alberta
Mammals, birds, fish… shots of Alberta’s diverse wildlife
Images that evoke a sense of place in Alberta
Fun, quirky, unrehearsed moments captured in Alberta
People playing, doing and experiencing tourism activities in Alberta

Photos must be uploaded to the appropriate Contest category. Judges reserve the right to place the entry in an appropriate category or remove a photo completely from the Contest should the photo be deemed inappropriate in general or not suitable for the category to which it was submitted. Photographs that are removed from the Contest are not eligible for any prize. Photographs that are placed in another category by the judges are only eligible to win a prize in the category into which the entry has been placed.
Winners' names and winning photographs will appear at http://alberta.canadiangeographic.ca/ and may be published in an upcoming issue of Canadian Geographic. Canadian Geographic Enterprises reserves the non-exclusive right to publish any entry and/or use any entry in its promotional material during or after the Contest without further compensation to the entrants. For Canadian Geographic Enterprises, promotional material shall include without limitation any print or electronic advertising or marketing material such as posters, online images, newspaper ads, television ads, e-mails and social media content.
Waiver forms/ model releases are the responsibility of the entrant and must be available in the event the photo is selected as a winning photograph.
With regard to any photograph submitted to this Contest, the owner of the photo retains all copyright.
By uploading any photograph to the Contest, you grant (or warrant that the owner of such materials expressly grants) Canadian Geographic Enterprises and Travel Alberta a world-wide, royalty-free, irrevocable and non-exclusive right and license to use, copy, adapt, transmit, communicate, publicly display and perform, distribute and create compilations and derivative works or merchandise from any such submitted photograph to promote the Contest. You represent and warrant that you have the right to grant the license set out above.
In the event copyright in any photograph submitted by an eligible entrant belongs to a minor, permission to enter the photo in the Contest, reprint, publish or otherwise reproduce the images, as described above, must have been obtained, in writing, from the child’s parent or guardian prior to entry of the photograph in the Contest. Proof of such permission must be provided to the Contest Sponsors immediately upon request.
Contest opens on June 26, 2013 and closes on January 23, 2014. All photographic entries must be uploaded through the contest website by 11:59 p.m. ET on January 23, 2014.
Entries submitted through fraudulent means or in any way tampered with, incorrect, unclear, forged, mutilated, illegible, indecipherable or mechanically reproduced may be disqualified at the sole discretion of the Contest Sponsors and/or the judging panel (referenced below).
All Entries become the property of the Contest Sponsors and will not be returned. The Contest Sponsors are not responsible for entries lost, late, misdirected, illegible or delayed for any reason.
The winners will be selected by a panel of judges on February 12, 2014 at the Canadian Geographic office located at:

All photographs submitted into the Contest will be reviewed by a representative of Canadian Geographic and the Contest winners will be selected by a panel of judges including representatives of Canadian Geographic and the photography community. Photographs will be assessed based on the following judging criteria: composition, content/originality, technical quality and visual impact.
Winners will be notified by email or telephone by 5:00 p.m. ET on February 21, 2014.
All decisions of the judging panel are final.
The Contest Sponsors are not responsible for any failure of the website during this Contest. Nor are they responsible for any problems or technical malfunctions of computer online systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment, software or any e-mail, online or internet entry lost due to technical problems or traffic congestion on the internet or at any website or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to an entrant’s or any other person’s computer or property related to or resulting from playing or downloading any material in the promotion.
Chances of Winning
The chances of winning a prize will depend on the number of eligible photographs received and the evaluation of the photographs by the judging panel.
Winners will receive no compensation, credit or prizing other than as disclosed in these Rules or otherwise provided at the sole discretion of the Contest Sponsors. Prizes are not transferable; no prize substitutions or equivalents are permitted, except by the Contest Sponsors at their sole discretion. In all cases, the Contest Sponsors reserve the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value for any of the Contest Prizes. Allow six to eight weeks for delivery of the category prizes and runner-up prizes.

The above prize description constitutes the expected prize details and all aspects thereof are subject to availability and subject to change. Some restrictions may apply. The winner will be provided with additional details after final arrangements have been made.
The winner and any companion must travel on the same aircraft and itinerary. Not all travel dates will be available for the travel portion of the Prize. No change will be permitted to travel dates or passenger names once the travel portion of the Prize has been booked by the Sponsors. The Sponsors reserve the right in its sole discretion to designate all flight particulars and route.
The Sponsors are not responsible for any postponement or cancellation, for any reason, of any event, exhibit or attraction forming part of the Prize. If the whole or any part or parts of any activity relating to the Prize is cancelled or postponed, the winner agrees to accept the balance of the Prize in and as full satisfaction of the Prize in its entirety and agrees that he/she shall have no claim against the Sponsors or any other person in respect of the cancelled or postponed portion of the Prize.
The cost of travel by the winner and any companion to and from the winner’s residence and companion's residence and the international airport of departure is solely the responsibility of the winner.
All expenses other than those specifically referred to above including, but not limited to, all meals, beverages, parking, gratuities, ground transportation to and from departure airport, travel and health insurance, fuel related to any car rental, excess baggage fees, airport fees, taxes, communication charges and all other items of a personal nature are the responsibility of the winner.
The winner and any companion are responsible for, at the winner’s sole cost, all required travel documents (including, as required, passports, vaccination certificates and insurance) required to undertake and complete any travel portion of the Prize. The Sponsors strongly recommend that the winner and any companion obtain any personal, medical, health, and hospital insurance as desired prior to departure. The Sponsors will not be responsible for the cost of the same.
The Prize must be accepted as awarded. The Prize is not convertible to cash and has no cash value. No transfer or substitution of any part of the Prize is permitted by the winner. The Sponsors reserve the right to substitute any part of the Prize with a prize of equal or greater value for any reason.
*Car Rental: The Prize may include the rental of a car. In order for that part of the Prize to be used, the winner or a companion must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age, insured for driving the vehicle and have a driver's license that is valid for use in Alberta. If those requirements are not met, the car rental cannot be utilized and the winner and the companion(s) must make their own transportation arrangements.
Category Prizes (One awarded for each of the four categories)

Runner-Up Prizes (One awarded for each of the four categories)
Each runner-up will receive a $150 gift certificate to Photohop.ca.
Honourable Mentions Prizes (One awarded for each of the four categories)

Prize Conditions (all prizes)
All prizes must be accepted as awarded and may not be used in conjunction with any other offer or promotion, sold, redeemed for cash, combined with any other promotion, exchanged for a different prize.
By accepting a prize, the prize winner agrees to hold the Contest Sponsors, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and their respective agencies, affiliates, parent(s), subsidiaries, agents, advertising and promotion agencies and anyone else involved in the development, production or handling of the Contest and their respective directors, officers, employees and assigns, harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out acceptance or use of a prize.
In order to be declared a winner, the selected entrant must sign and return a declaration and release form confirming eligibility and compliance with these Contest Rules and Regulations, consenting to the use, without further compensation, of winner’s name, address (city only) and photograph(s) in any Contest-related publicity and releasing the Contest Sponsors, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and their respective agencies, affiliates, parent(s), subsidiaries, agents, advertising and promotion agencies and anyone else involved in the development, production or handling of the Contest and their respective directors, officers, employees and assigns from all liability arising in connection with the Contest or the acceptance, use or redemption of a Prize as awarded. The declaration and release must be returned to the Contest Sponsors within ten (10) days after receipt of the declaration and release from the Contest Sponsors. Entrants who fail or are unable to meet any of these Rules and Regulations may be disqualified and alternate winner(s) will be selected.
Any litigation respecting the conduct and awarding of a prize in this Contest in Québec may be submitted to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux for a ruling. Any litigation respecting the awarding of a prize may be submitted to the Régie only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement. Void where prohibited by law.
